“We’re an element of history,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “It’s something that’s almost indescribable … So many individuals along the best way have put in a lot work for this program and having the chance to achieve this, we would like to thank them and likewise represent them once we go, and in the remainder of this tournament [as well].”
Willy Hernangomez had 25 points, Santiago Aldama scored 20 points, and Alex Abrines added 11 within the loss for Spain.
After trailing by 10 at the half, the Canadians battled back within the third quarter to go ahead by three. Spain then outscored Canada 21-6 in the ultimate 4:44 of the quarter to enter the fourth with a 12-point lead.
“We just dug deep,” Barrett said. “Dillon was huge, Shai iced the sport, made all of the free throws. We just dug deep, man. We hit some adversity, down 12 to start out the fourth quarter and we just stayed together.”

Canada scored the primary eight points of the fourth as Brooks drilled a 3 to open the quarter and get Canada inside nine. A pair of free throws from Gilgeous-Alexander made it 73-66 and a second three from Brooks within the quarter trimmed the deficit to 4 before Spain scored its first points of the quarter with 6:04 remaining.
“It was a very, really good game,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “Really high-level basketball. It was lots of adversity. They played a very well-rounded game from start to complete. It’s a very good team over there. Hats off to them. I believe our group just wanted it a bit bit more. We knew what was at stake and we were willing to do whatever it takes to get it done.”
A pair of free throws from Willy Hernangomez prolonged Spain’s lead back to seven with 4 minutes remaining, but an enormous offensive rebound from Nickeil Alexander-Walker led to Gilgeous-Alexander then finding Alexander-Walker within the corner for a three-pointer to get Canada back inside 4 with 3:38 remaining.
Canada dialled up its defence within the fourth, taking Spain completely out of their offensive rhythm as Gilgeous-Alexander scored on a drive while being fouled. He made the free throw to finish the three-point play and get Canada inside a degree, 78-77, with 1:51 remaining. After free throws from Hernangomez put Spain back up by three, Brooks hit his third three of the quarter to tie the sport at 80 with 1:10 remaining, before forcing a turnover on the opposite end.

“It was special,” Gilgeous-Alexander said of Brooks’ fourth quarter. “One for the books. He’s a pacesetter. He does the proper things on the basketball floor. He plays with the proper energy. He’s a man you usually want in your team. Things haven’t been going his way the entire tournament, the past month and a half, but he’s had the proper energy, he’s done the proper things for the team and he was rewarded tonight by the basketball gods. He was big that whole fourth quarter. He made shots, played defensively like he normally does. He was ready for the moment. Big-time game.”
Gilgeous-Alexander took it from there.
A step-back jumper with 44 seconds remaining put Canada in front 82-80. Next was a steal before being fouled and earning a visit to the road. He made each free throws to place Canada ahead by 4 with 21 seconds remaining. A layup from Juan Nunez brought Spain inside two with 15 seconds on the clock, but Gilgeous-Alexander sank one other pair of free throws to maintain Canada in front by 4 with 13 seconds remaining.
After a 3 from Aldama trimmed the lead to only a degree with five seconds on the clock, Gilgeous-Alexander was fouled again with 4 seconds on the clock. He calmly sank each free throws to maintain Canada in front by three and seal the victory.
Gilgeous-Alexander finished the sport 14-for-16 from the road and 7-for-12 from the ground. Brooks was an ideal 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, with all of his three-pointers coming within the fourth.
“We found a way,” Team Canada head coach Jordi Fernández said. “It was a team effort. Shai and Dillon took us home. It’s one in all those special moments. Going to the Olympics, it’s very special. It’s very special for this system, but for these guys, what they’ve done since Aug. 1, it’s great, but now we’ve to maintain interested by the subsequent game. We’ve got three more games to go [at the World Cup]. We didn’t come here simply to go to the Olympics. I told the blokes we would like to be certain that everyone knows we’re knocking at the door and we’re thirsty for more.”
The win qualifies Canada for its first trip to the Olympics since 2000.

“It was awesome,” Fernández said of the qualification. “It means so much to (general manager) Rowan (Barrett), Michael Bartlett, to the entire board and people who find themselves supporting this program and wish to do things the proper way. We’ve got the talent to do that for many, a few years. I’m comfortable for those people. I’m comfortable for the coaches who worked here before. Nick Nurse, Jay Triano, they’re a part of what we’re doing. They did so much for this program. Congrats to them too. They at all times did all the things to grow it. [I’m feeling] comfortable and the subsequent game is the quarterfinals now.”
For Barrett, who has grown up along with his father’s No. 9 Olympic jersey hanging on the wall at home, the sensation was pure elation.
“Man, it’s amazing,” he said. “Simply to make history. The last time we went to the Olympics, I used to be just born. We had number nine on the squad [then] and now number nine goes to be on the subsequent one. It’s amazing.”
With the win, Canada will now face Slovenia within the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 8:30 a.m. ET / 5:30 a.m PT. Fans can catch all the motion continue to exist Sportsnet and streaming continue to exist SN Now.
